"Female tattoo artists have flourished in this new creative environment. Their presence as participating artists has encouraged female customers to venture into a previously closed and inhospitable world in their search for self-expression. New designs, emerging from a completely different sensibility, have broadened the appeal of tattooing and fueled the unprecedented expansion"
As recently as a few years ago,1998,, a woman waltzing into a tattoo shop in search of some ink conjured up an assortment of unflattering sexist images that prevented many females from joining the club. Now days, it is totally different. For those few brave hearts that crossed the threshold and entered a tattoo shop, their artistic tastes were squashed by a "for ladies only" section where the design options featured a disappointing assortment of ladybugs and butterflies. As late as the 1980's, women were such a rare sight in most tattoo shops that artists confidently hung signs out joking, "women tattooed for free." Today those signs have been pulled down: Tastes and opinions have changed dramatically--All tattoo shops today would go out of business if women didn't get tattoos.
